I Art Seoul

Here is a sampling of art that I saw while wandering around Insa-Dong and Samcheong-Dong in Seoul.

Museum of Contemporary Art: Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art

This show at the MCA juxtaposes 7 contemporary artists to Alexander Calder. Within these artists works, you can see where they took references from Calder or where they allude to him.

On the main level of the MCA, there are 2 large halls that face each other. On one side was pieces by Calder and on the other were the other 7 artists.

This aluminum sculpture was made by Aaron Curry. There are no bolts or joints in his piece. It's a freestanding, balanced figurative work and you can see his reference to Calder in the shapes that he uses.

An earlier plywood piece by A. Curry

"Pig Latin" by Jason Meadows. As you walk around this metal sculpture, you pass between two-dimensions and three-dimensions.

This exhibit is at the MCA (in Chicago) until Oct. 17th, 2010

Tim Hawkinson at Blum & Poe

I love T. Hawkinson. He makes the world feel like a huge playground that he is really curious about.

Take a closer look at what this bike is made of...

Lots of spinning pieces in this one.

A mummified hand? Actually it's made from apple cores, banana peels and a gold twistie tie.

This show is at Blum & Poe until June 26th.

Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth

Nick Cave (not the musician) made these sculptural "soundsuits" out of found objects and lots of crafty materials. He calls them soundsuits because when worn, they create sound or at least invoke a sense of sound. Each area of the exhibit also came with a soundtrack with ambient sounds which you were meant to listen to. The best part of the night came at the end when the museum supplied everyone with stuff to decorate our own t-shirts or socks to resemble soundsuits! I just made a pom pom necklace and bracelet. : )

Fuzzy soundsuits.

A potholder soundsuit.

A grizzly bear made from old J. Crew sweaters.

ART BASEL: Miami 2006

Here's a selection of artwork from December 2006 at the art fairs in Miami.
(sorry- if a photo has no caption, I don't remember the artist)

This is the Miami Convention Center- looks like an art factory doesnt it?

Marcel Dzama

Rex Ray wallpaper

This was a lady who I saw twice this weekend. She sort of did this guerilla performance piece where she blew up a huge balloon...but then I got bored and walked away.

But then I saw her again the next day somewhere else. She had blown up the balloon and had gotten her whole body inside it! Something like back into the womb I guess?

Then she popped herself out of it and everyone clapped. Yay.
